I stitched on planes, trains, and in automobiles. Creating over 350 darling hexies. Need to find a cute jar to hold these treasures. I have heard Hexie quilts referred to as Lifetime quilts... I cannot imagine how difficult it would be using paper pieces instead of the impenetrable mylar pieces. I could stitch away and the mylar controlled my needle from inadvertently going all the way through front to back. Super, super, super crisp edges, also.
Stitching Hexies was the source of much discussion with seat mates and fellow travelers. The quilt created (sometime in my Lifetime) by these hexies will remind me of this wonderful trip celebrating 35 years of wedded bliss to the finest man I know.

I wish i could do hexies on a plane .. i´m not allowed to travel with scissors or needles on board , just a book ....
OK, so I also thought the TSA would prohibit scissors... BUT I am rather addicted to hexies and the long flights were perfect for that sort of activity.
So I printed out TSA's guidelines from their site and it says scissors with less than 1" of blade are acceptable! Hip hip hooray! I stopped by my LQS and asked if they had a tiny scissor for flying with and Voila! The polka dot scissors are all handle and just a 3/4" blade. I wrapped their policy around the scissors and let it go through the scanner. No problemo.
It sure made threading the needle over and over again a breeze to have a sharp scissor cut on the thread.
I've stitched hexies on an airplane many times. They are my 'to go' project when I travel, even the half hour ride to the supermarket!
I have a question, are the hexies precut? And thank you for the tip of scissors on planes.. Sylvia klein
I retired from a Airline and they have ALWAYS allowed scissors, crochet needles, knitting needles after 911. I was working at that time and they NEVER said you could not have these onboard......
Actually, the scissor rule is 4"...
I also like the discussion that happens when sewing in public
So true, Christina! Are people surprised needles are still made and there are people that know how to use them? Or are they thrilled with the beauty we can create?
Beautiful hexies and congratulations on 35 years! He really is a wonderful man! Love you both!!
Blunt nosed scissors at 4" or less are allowed!
